“Loon kutophatl” (The Day of Midsummer), the Traditional Ritual Celebration of Khanty

2 august, 2014, Yamal-Nenets autonomous region


This is the line to sum up results of the annual work of fishermen and reindeer herders. At that festive day, communicating with God, the elders ask for well-being, luck, health and that the work would be a joy for every labour-able man.

The event programme includes ritual ceremonies, sightseeing tours, "Big Fish Soup", tea party, concert, national games, contests, quizzes, riding by kaldanks and much more.

The festival is held in the Natural and ethnographic park-museum "Zhivun" in the village of Khanty-Muzhy. This is the open-air museum that reproduces the image of Khanty village of early XX century. In the museum architectural objects (houses, outbuildings), big-sized items (boats, sledges), natural complexes are preserved and demonstrated.
